Some of us were in the living room, sitting on a mangy carpet or sprawled on the sofa, while the others were in the kitchen or the bedroom. Evelyn Chu was holding court in patched jeans and large pullover. The topic was the generation of the 1970s: success, selling out, and cynicism.

“I’m going to give the public what it wants, baby,” Evelyn said, her voice high from too much vodka. “Look at Warhol. That’s me. Warhol and Pop Art for the trashy masses who put the Beatles up there with Jesus H. Christ.”

They asked me why I wrote. I had to think about it.

“For fame, fortune, and women,” I said with a frozen smile.

“Bullshit,” Evelyn swiped at the air. “Tell us the truth.” She looked at Lisa. “Lisa, you tell us.”

“He can speak for himself,” Lisa said.

“But he never tells us anything. He’s as close-mouthed as a muzzled dog. What’re you afraid of, Mark Trecroci?”

“Ain’t afraid of you . . . Chu.”

“Oh, he’s an evasive one, isn’t he?”

At their exhibit in September she sold ten works, she said. It kept her in rent and food for six months. She had a plan to write a memoir of growing up in a Chinese home, being physically and mentally abused, turning to women for sexual solace, turning to drugs and prostitution – all the absolute unvarnished truth.

“Just what the feminists want,” she added, her lips curled down in defiance. “They’d lap it up like a sweetoozing juice hole. I’d be a celebrity on the CBC. Then I could sell my artwork at a much larger price. Or make a movie on the ways of sexually satisfying a woman – ways men have no idea of. It would last as long as it took to have an orgasm.”
